DIY Fabric Flower Garland

Add some floral decor to any room with this beautiful flower garland! This would be easy to adapt to any color scheme and a great project to use up those fabric scraps!

I am back today to share the tutorial for my DIY fabric flower garland. This garland is perfect for your spring and summer decor! I can imagine lots of places other than the mantel to use it year round too! How about in a little girl’s room or a nursery?! How cute would that be?

Luckily I had all the supplies on hand for this garland. I have a pretty good fabric scrap stash so it is nice to be able to use some of it! Even if you do not have fabric on hand, you could buy a jelly roll to make this project. A jelly roll is a nice way to get a collection of fabric strip colors without having to buy a big amount of each individual fabric. In addition to the different colors, I also used different textured fabrics to give some variety to the garland.

A quick simple DIY project

This was a nice easy craft that you can make in a couple hours of an afternoon or evening. I love to work on projects while watching TV. It makes me feel like I am being productive while being lazy at the same time. Ha!

I originally shared this garland with my Easter mantle this year. I chose my colors to coordinate with the wood egg Easter wreath but you could literally do this in any color scheme you wish.

Choose colors that coordinate with your decor or for a certain holiday. Wouldn’t this be cute to make in red, white and blue to add to your 4th of July decor?

Supplies to make a DIY fabric flower garland

How to Make the Fabric Flowers

Cut or tear your fabric into 2″ strips that are around 24-28″ long. I had a combination of cut and torn edges on my strips. I like how the torn edges gives the flower a more shabby look. To tear the fabric, just snip with your scissors into the fabric every 2 inches. When you tear your fabric, it will tear in a straight line.

Fold the strip in half. With the raw edge down, start rolling the end of the fabric into itself. As you are rolling, start to occasionally fold the strip away from you. Once in a while add a dab of hot glue into the roll to secure the flower. Keep rolling and folding until you have about a 1-1.5″ tail. Add some glue right before the tail so the flower does not unravel. I also put a dab of glue in between the folded tail to hold it together.

Continue making flowers from each strip. I made about 4 flowers from each color. I only had enough fabric to make 2 flowers from the dark purple however.

How to make the floral garland

Cut a length of twine based on where you are going to put your garland. I cut mine at 60 inches to fit across our mantel and allowing for some extra length on the ends. Lay out your flowers along the twine length to figure out your pattern and spacing.

Attach the flowers by wrapping the tail around the twine and gluing the tail to the flower. This way allows you to be able to move the flower along the twine if you need to space it out better.

I arranged mine in a pattern, but you could put the flowers on randomly if you choose.

I use these command hooks on the ends of my mantel to hang the garland from. Just tie a couple loops on each end of the garland and attach to the hooks.
